Bob White - Pisgah View Community Garden

When we were in Asheville, North Carolina during the Winter of 2009, Bob White's wife, Lucia Dougherty, contacted Greg and suggested that we interview him because he had many careers throughout his adult life. Bob told Greg that he "wasn't exactly of the white collar ilk." Greg asked, "Well, of what ilk are you?" to which Bob replied "no collar!" That began our friendly repartee with a man who defies categorization. Sure, you can list Bob's series of careers - scholar, Black Panther member, bookstore owner, carpenter, community organizer - but that doesn't begin to tell his story.

Three years ago, Bob founded the Pisgah View Community Garden and his life took yet another turn. Initially Bob fought the idea, which came to him while listening to Miles Davis. But the pieces fell into place, members of the Asheville community donated time, energy and raw materials, and the children of the Pisgah View housing community found both a sanctuary and a sense of purpose in this thriving patch of earth. The garden grows each year and Bob's commitment is stronger than ever.
